My thoughts on poetry
Poetry is the art of rhythmical composition, written or spoken, for exciting pleasure by beautiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts, as defined by 'dictionary.com'. For me poems are another way to describe the meaning, or get to the point in a more complicated way. It is much harder for me to understand the meaning of poems, however it makes it easier to understand deeper emotions and feelings of the object. Poems use similes, metaphors, personifications, and more to get in depth and show the readers through imagery and specific syntax exactly what the author wants you to know. I don't like to sit at home and read poems because it takes up too much time and requires too much thinking unlike a book, which tells you what is going on and gets directly to the point. However I think the poetry unit is a great part of an AP literature class because it teaches students a different way of visualizing and understanding things. Reading books after books is great but that is necessary for everything and every class, but reading poems and writing poems is much different. It is harder and I think more students struggle with the process of understanding it as a whole. They understand the little descriptive parts, and little details more then the point of the writing. For me, it is more interesting to read books because you are understand what is going on, and it helps you get hooked on the story and makes you keep on reading, but for poems it is different. I don't like to read poems, but I guess most songs are considered poetry, which most people love. Songs have the same style as poems, especially rap. Most songs rhyme, follow certain patterns, give details, but are hard to find an actual meaning within it's words other then the theme or basic understanding. I think poems help everyone get another perspective on a the reading, and are come in different ways, including songs which most people love!

  1. I agree. When I read poerty I tend to zone out, leaving me to have to read it again. I would much rather read a whole book on the subject than a one page poem which could take just as long to understand. You are right in that and articical won't get emotion across as well as a poem, but it is hard to get the emotion if the poet uses so many complicated comparisons and large words.I think it is easier to understand song meanings but most of the time, people like songs because of the tune.

  2. I agree that poems make us students think in a different way. Rather than getting most of the basic information straight away from a reading of a story, a poem requires more than one perusal to obtain the full meaning of what the author intended.

I think in this way, a lot of songs are very similar to poems. At first listen they might seem simple, but have a more personal feeling for the writer of the song.

  3. I like poetry. I'm not very good at interpreting it, but I like reading it. I like how poetry can make us see things differently. To One person it can me one thing and to another something totally different. Also, I like when the words flow nicely together and make a good rhythm, a lot like with music.

I think that song writers are poets. They way that they convey their thoughts is similar to the way poets do.

  4. In my opinion, poetry is just a complicated way of explaining a subject that would have otherwise been so simple. The one thing that I do like about it, is that it gives different perspectives and gives you a more open minded opinion to an interpretation of the poem. When I read some poetry I feel like a new minded world (if you will) has opened up to me. Even though I am not good at interpreting most poetry I do enjoy it sometimes but, it isn't the type of free reading I would go to first.

  5. I agree with Nijhum in that poems are very different than books. It is much more difficult to sit down and read a short poem and emediatly get what the author is trying to conve. I usually have read it two or more times to get the deep meaning given in such short words. In a book the charaters, plot and meaning are usually spelled out for you and shouldn't have to read it more than once or twice. I find it much more difficult to read poetry but gives your brain more to think about and is a great part of literature. It is like no other kind of english it is like in it's own seperate section in my opinion.
