WOW! What an ending to Ethan Frome, what I thought was going to be a very very boring book turned suddenly into an extremely, well semi-exciting book. Ms. Arko had always mentioned that the book was not going to end all happy, so I just figured that Mattie would leave and Ethan would get the “smash up” doing something farm related. But I did not expect anything like that to happen. The first thing I noticed while I was finishing the book was that Ethan seems to have actual feelings for Mattie, and he does indeed love her, that became very apparent when he first thought about running away with her and started writing a note to Zeena. I always thought that maybe his feelings were a little fake, like she was a sort of substitute for his otherwise boring wife and his life. But the note, along with his continued rebellion against Zeena really proved that Mattie meant a lot to him, enough for him to basically become a new person.
But the second thing I noticed, right after Mattie confessed her love for Ethan, and suggested that they no longer go on living, was that throughout the whole book, it seems that every character gives their opinion. We are somewhat in Ethan’s head, or at least getting the story from him, we get some of the narrator’s feelings through his changing the story to make it sound more exciting, and we even get Mrs. Hale’s opinion about the whole thing after we come back to present time. But we never get anywhere near Zeena’s opinion/feelings on anything that has happened. Mrs. Hale even says it “nobody knows Zeena’s thoughts.” I wondered why that is? I mean we get a very good description of her personality, at least from Ethan’s point of view. But she never really says anything that she thinks. She wants to get rid of Mattie, but never gives a specific reason, just that she needs to go. And then at the end she suddenly has compassion and the 3 of them somehow live together, but still Zeena does not give any indication of what she is thinking. Anyone have any ideas as to why that is?
The final thing I noticed was that during the sled scene, it reminded me very much of Romeo and Juliet, and the typical love story. Ms. Arko says that this storyline could be told anywhere, and it has been. But Ethan Frome turned into much more than a storyline, it turned into a book full of symbols and hidden meanings and about a small town named Starkfield and how that affects everyone’s lives, constantly being imprisoned by the town and by each other, it all comes out in Ethan’s personality, or lack there of.

I think Zeena doesn't like to say what she thinks. She wants Ethan to guess what she wants by her actions. Zeena feels the need to take care of Mattie when she hits the tree because that is just her way of doing things. Zeena takes care of others, but when there is no one to take care of, she expects everyone to take care of her even if her sickness is fake.
ReplyDeleteI kind of agree with you Sophie, but I also think that Zeena's sickness was kind of a security blanket, just so Ethan would never run away from her. So because of he not wanting to speak her mind, she thinks that her fake sickness will speak for her.
ReplyDeleteWell i really liked this book, and all the characters in it. There was a lot of personality, bad and good within all of them. Ethan was shy and bland, but i think this was due to his relationship and life with Zenna, who is possibly thee most annoying and boring character I have ever read about. Whenever Ethan is with Mattie, his mood changes and he becomes a different person, and is vibrant and wants to have fun, just like Mattie. However, when he's near Zeena, it feels as if he's not even alive. I think Zeena wished she could've been everything Mattie was, (pretty, lively, and love of Ethan's life) but she wasn't, and having your man love your relative... well that would sure bring me down! She had reasons to not be so happy go lucky, but at least in the end, she did the right thing and took care of both Mattie and Ethan.
ReplyDeleteIt is true that we never get inside Zeena's head, but I felt like I could tell what she was thinking though out the book. She wants to replace Mattie, so she doesn't like her but we still don't know if she knows that Ethan is in love with her. I think the author didn't want us to know what Zeena was thinking so we would side with Ethan. She looked upon as an evil witch and Ethan the poor man who is trapped to her side. It would take away from the discovery we made in class that Zeena is the real is the real victim.
ReplyDeleteI too thought that this book was not going to be as kind of exciting as it was. I definitely did not expect the ending that happened. I think Ethan was so depressed and not a very elated person because he never was really in love with Zeena. The whole time he really liked Mattie and he really couldn't do anything about it. After thinking about it I guess the ending is not as big of a shock to me as it was at first.
ReplyDeleteThis ending was perfect! Though incredibly sad and dramatic, Mattie and Ethan's injuries symbolize the pain that they would have felt their entire lives anyway. Zeena is portrayed as being the most terrible spouse to Ethan, and by the end, she experiences the emotional pain the two suffered through the enitre book. Because she (as well as everyone else) knows what Ethan and Mattie's inentions were, Zeena faces a lifetime of this understanding along with caring for them herself. By the end of the book, the switch in roles completely shocked me, and switched persepectives of all characters.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kelsey about Zeena using her sickness to sort of trap Ethan into staying with her, because I think she senses his feelings for Mattie but doesn't say anything because she doesn't want to believe it. I think she's content with just sitting back and trying not to accept the truth of what is going on around her - like she's in some stage of denial.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Zeena is a much more complex character then we all give her credit for. Yes she probably uses her illness as a security blanket but we have only been looking at the bad or self pitying behaviors that she performs. I think Zeena is a incredibly smart woman that figured out what was going on between her husband and Mattie. And she is also incredibly strong, because if you think about it how strong would you be if you found out your one love was in love with another woman? I would lose my mind and yet Zeena has stays there and even takes care of the two when they are injured. It takes one heck of a woman to do the stuff Zeena did for Ethan.
